ESG Manager

The ESG Manager will lead enterprise sustainability and ESG (environmental, social, governance) and inspire us to a more environmentally and socially sustainable future. This is a pivotal role in defining and successfully implement the Sage ESG strategy to positively impact people and the planet.

This new role will work with many stakeholders to deliver, capture and communicate our commitment to reduce inequality, support our communities, protect our planet, and strengthen the Sage Housing brand. This work will transform our in-house ESG capability, achieved by working with a cross-functional team, and in so doing you will ensure that our ESG strategy promotes, protects and enhances the Company's reputation, both internally and externally.

Reporting directly to Head of Marketing and working collaboratively across the organisation, with all stakeholders, the ESG Manager will drive Sage’s ESG strategy and project manage the delivery of ESG actions across the organisation. In addition they will deliver the internal and external sustainability communications and reporting strategy, including developing content, tracking metrics, gathering quantitative and qualitative data, evaluating impacts and outcomes and developing an industry-leading sustainability report.

This position requires an experienced and detail-oriented project management professional who is passionate about enterprise sustainability

The primary responsibilities include 1) ESG strategy and implementation, 2) Stakeholder management and Communication 3) People management  and 4) Data management and reporting.

ESG Strategy and Implementation

  • Lead the delivery of the Sage ESG Strategy by designing, implementing, monitoring, and measuring the impact of a comprehensive programme of initiatives.
  • Regularly review the risks and opportunities facing the business across all ESG areas and adapt the ESG strategy as appropriate.
  • Design and implement the necessary processes and procedures to enable the strategy and effectively embed these in business-as-usual activities.
  • Bring together and lead internal groups on the development of key metrics against which progress on sustainability will be measured and assessed internally and externally. This will include collaboration with business leaders, our investor partners (Blackstone) and other internal groups.
  • Serve as subject matter expert on third-party reporting guidance including The Sustainability Reporting Standard for Social Housing (SRS), ESG Social Housing Working Group as well as UK and global ESG framework standards. Identify current and emerging industry trends and offer suggestions on best-in-class approaches. Work with Blackstone colleagues to align our approach to the Blackstone guidelines.
  • Develop business cases to ensure the impact of key initiatives are understood and realised.
  • Maintain competitive and industry benchmarking, and track innovative approaches to sustainability/ESG reporting, including collection and publication of metrics, proof-points, and narrative content. Using this to inform and develop Sage’s ESG strategy.

Stakeholder management and Communication

  • Develop and lead the implementation of stakeholder engagement plans and represent Sage externally e.g. government, investors, regulator, industry bodies, peer groups etc.
  • Serve as the internal subject matter expert for sustainability initiatives, taking every opportunity to communicate and educate others on sustainability topics.
  • Working with our Internal Communications and People functions, create and implement a programme of ongoing organisational communications and education to raise awareness and drive colleague advocacy for our ESG priorities.

People management

  • Provide effective line management for an ESG Analyst, including coaching, development, and career path guidance.
  • Provide appropriate support and challenge to functional roles, as a means of both delivering the ESG programme and embedding ESG skills in the business.
  • Successfully manage internal stakeholders at all levels of the organisation, up to the Board and lead the ESG Steering Committee.

Data management and reporting

  • The collection and management of data and analysis across the whole of ESG, with a particular emphasis on core areas selected for focus.
  • Provide regular updates and high-quality reporting to the Leadership Team, Board and ESG Steering Committee

Experience required:
Candidates must have at least five years of experience working in an ESG environment or similar.

Exhibit a deep interest and experience in environmental, social, governance, sustainability, and corporate responsibility. Previous experience in communications and ESG reporting or consulting is essential.

Exceptional project management, organisational, time management and leadership skills.

Strong written and verbal communication skills including the ability to express complex ideas simply and the ability to make connections between seemingly unrelated concepts.

Must demonstrate self-motivation and the ability to work well independently.

Strong interpersonal skills and ability to interact with multiple stakeholders including Sage leaders and investors, internal subject matter experts and external organisations.

Qualifications and Experience

Track record of developing and delivering qualitative and quantitative sustainability and ESG (environmental, social, governance) strategies.

Technical knowledge and experience in sustainability reporting and with relevant ESG standards; familiarity with the housing sector is preferred.

Experience with approaches to managing for consistent and accurate responses and data collection, including leveraging IT solutions as applicable.

Proven ability to read, analyse, interpret and translate large sets of data into simple insights or reports.

Excellent project management skills and planning and reporting experience, with a proven track record for delivering successful qualitative and quantitative reporting and an ability to balance multiple projects.

Must effectively influence  by partnering across the business to accomplish goals through others without direct authority and be able to inspire the trust, confidence and respect of colleagues and senior leaders.

Ability to demonstrate exemplary personal judgment given the potential sensitive content, initiative and collaborative skills while working as part of a high-performing team.

Knowledge of social and environmental issues and passion for sustainability.

Bachelor's degree in relevant area: Masters, MBA preferred.
